Pineapple is a delicious and healthy fruit that may be eaten by almost everyone. The flesh of the pineapple is rich in nutrients, with almost all of the vitamins and minerals needed by humans. But, pineapple also contains bromelain, which can cause diarrhea in some people.
Bromelain is a protein-digesting enzyme in pineapple stems and juice. It gives pineapple its special flavor. Bromelain has been shown to inhibit tumor cell growth, as well as heart disease prevention and treatment.
Bromelain found in pineapples has been used for millennia to treat pain, inflammation, and other ailments. It is generally safe and can help with a number of inflammatory problems. Bromelain, however, can cause abdominal cramps in certain individuals with sensitive gastrointestinal systems.
There are a few things you can do if you’re prone to having diarrhea after eating pineapple. First, only eat ripe pineapple since unripe pineapple has higher amounts of bromelain. Second, remove the core before eating because the core contains more bromelain than the flesh. Finally, start with tiny amounts of pineapple and work your way up to ensure that your digestive system has time to adjust.
Before eating, you can also soak the pineapple in salt water for 30 minutes. The salt water not only destroys the bromelain but it will make the flavor of the pineapple more mild.
